Kroc IPJ Awards Women Waging Peace Grants to Nine Peacebuilders





The Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (Kroc IPJ) awarded nine Women Waging Peace grants to peacebuilders in support of network members attending conferences and other activities relevant to their peacebuilding work. Established in 1999, the Women Waging Peace network has grown to be a powerful and inclusive international community of peacebuilding experts who are committed to ending cycles of violence through partnerships and initiatives.

Angeline Kaïgama Kel

Angeline is a recognized and active civil society leader in CAR and is an expert and trainer on gender and elections, particularly in matters of women's political participation. She is the Founder and Secretary General of the Caucus of Women Leaders for the Promotion of Parity in CAR and the founding President of the NGO Women Act for Living Together (WALT).

Angeline received a grant to attend a sub-regional summit of feminists in Cameroon.

Draga Gajić

Draga is a Political Scientist and GESI Specialist from Bosnia and Herzegovina. She is the author of four books and numerous research papers in the field of gender studies, women’s history, women’s heritage, GBV, gender and peace, and art and peacebuilding.

Draga received a grant to attend a course at the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).

Grace Nakirijja Lwanga

Grace is a Junior Peace Builder in the Kroc IPJ Uganda NextGen initiative and a Fellow with the Indrani Fellowship cohort 2023. She is a Feminist with 24 years of professional experience in policy and budget advocacy for passage of gender equality laws into law and lobbying government to allocate resources for implementation, prevention and response to gender-based violence in humanitarian and development communities.

Grace received a grant to attend the Sexual Violence Research Initiative Forum.  

May Akl

May Akl is a Professor of Humanities and the Executive Director of Seraph-Center for Memory, Diversity, and Dialogue. Her work is centered on peacebuilding in post-conflict areas in the Middle East and focuses on minority groups. She is also a Yale World Fellow '10 and has played an active role in dialogue and reconciliation efforts in Lebanon.

May received a grant to attend the Bologna Peacebuilding Forum.

Mossarat Qadeem

Mossarat is co-founder of PAIMAN Alumni Trust, a pioneer organization in Preventing violent extremism (PVE) and WPS in Pakistan which has received international recognition and applause for its innovative PVE model. Mossarat brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her work at the intersection of religion, gender, and peacebuilding. She is adept not only at community-level mediation but also at regional-level mediation, reviving and adapting traditional Pashtun mediation practices to promote social cohesion in areas affected by violent extremism. She is a political analyst, peace practitioner and researcher.

Mossarat received a grant to attend the Global Peacebuilder Summit.

Nakibuuka Maxensia Takirambule

Maxensia is a Ugandan feminist leader and development worker with a focus on women-led and women-oriented projects, social justice for women, and community health for women and children in the era of HIV/AIDS, women’s economic empowerment as an avenue for women’s emancipation, and increasing women’s participation in politics as a way of profiling them in decision making positions, among others.

Maxensia received a grant to support transportation to her programming and activities.

Nargis Ziyavatdinova

Nargis is an expert consultant on gender equality and Women, Peace Security issues, working for the NGO "NIHOL" Initiatives Development and support Center on the inclusion of women in the new security, working with local organizations led by women on resolution 1325 “Women, Peace and Security”. She conducted trainings for the Women’s Learning Partnership (WLP) organization. Since 2024, she has been an expert in working with public organizations and on issues of protecting the rights of minorities.

Nargis received a grant to attend the Commission on the Status of Women.  

Nigorakhon Madazimova

Nigorakhon is a consultant on gender equality (freelancer) in Uzbekistan. She graduated from the Institute of Engineering and Economy in 1999. Since 2007, she has served as an expert and consultant on gender equality and women, peace and security for the local NGO Hamroh. She contributed to the implementation of the Action Plan in Andijan region on UNSC 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. In 2018-2021, she served as a consultant on gender issues and women, peace and security at UNFPA Uzbekistan.

Nigorakhon received a grant to attend the Commission on the Status of Women.

Tumasang Epse Wazeh Nicoline Nwenushi

Nicoline Nwenushi is an Independent Jurist and Gender and Development expert, a peacebuilder and Human Rights Defender. She is also a Global Advisory Group Member for the implementation of the Women's Inclusion for New Security (SHE WINS) projects. In 2023, Nicoline was awarded the prestigious Peace Achievement Award for contributing to spreading the spirit and culture of peace through the IWPG peace Initiative for the cessation of war and realization of world peace.

Nicoline received a grant to attend the UN Civil Society Conference in Support of the Summit of the Future.
